Summary:
case-insensitive package name check during CRAN submission process

Detailed description
L.S.,

I submitted a package via R-Forge to CRAN.
The name of the package was SDA. There
was already an existing package named sda,
and I was kindly reminded by Kurt Hornik
that CRAN package names should be case-insensitively
unique to avoid problems under Windows.

Maybe a check against the current list of
CRAN package names (and appropriate error
message) could be added during the R-Forge
CRAN submission process to avoid manual
intervention of the CRAN maintainer ?

Kind regards,
Tobias

Hi,

the CRAN submit page is now slightly improved and displays the version already available on CRAN (if there is any).

The matchup is not case insensitive, I'm considering changing it though.

Best regards
Martin

Thanks for your suggestion, but I'm afraid I don't think that dropping an error in case a package already exists on CRAN will work well. The problem is that many packages on R-Forge have a corresponding "stable" version on CRAN, i.e., each package maintainer of these packages would receive such a message.
Anyway, you should have seen a field at the bottom of the box (in the R packages tab) saying: "Stable Release: Get <package> <version> from CRAN". This could be a way to check for existing CRAN packages.
On the other hand we could advertise the CRAN package again on the submission form.
I'll keep you in the loop.

Stefan
